چکیده

The deposition of fog to a wind-exposed 3 m tall Puerto Rican cloud forest at 1010 m elevation was studied using the water budget and eddy covariance methods. Fog deposition was calculated from the water budget as throughfall plus stemflow plus interception loss minus rainfall corrected for wind-induced loss and effect of slope. The eddy covariance method was used to calculate the turbulent liquid cloud water flux from instantaneous turbulent deviations of the surface-normal wind component and cloud liquid water content as measured at 4 m above the forest canopy. Fog deposition rates according to the water budget under rain-free conditions (0Ð11 š 0Ð05 mm h 1) and rainy conditions (0Ð24 š 0Ð13 mm h 1) were about three to six times the eddy-covariance-based estimate (0Ð04 š 0Ð002 mm h 1). Under rain-free conditions, water-budget-based fog deposition rates were positively correlated with horizontal fluxes of liquid cloud water (as calculated from wind speed and liquid water content data). Under rainy conditions, the correlation became very poor, presumably because of errors in the corrected rainfall amounts and very high spatial variability in throughfall. It was demonstrated that the turbulent liquid cloud water fluxes as measured at 4 m above the forest could be only 3⁄440% of the fluxes at the canopy level itself due to condensation of moisture in air moving upslope. Other factors, which may have contributed to the discrepancy in results obtained with the two methods, were related to effects of footprint mismatch and methodological problems with rainfall measurements under the prevailing windy conditions. Best estimates of annual fog deposition amounted to 3⁄4770 mm year 1 for the summit cloud forest just below the ridge top (according to the water budget method) and 3⁄4785 mm year 1 for the cloud forest on the lower windward slope (using the eddy-covariance-based deposition rate corrected for estimated vertical flux divergence). Fog Deposition Measurements with the Eddy Covariance Method

The eddy covariance method is considered the only direct flux measurement method. Its application for fog deposition measurements is relatively new and has a high potential to allow the accurate determination of nutrient and trace element deposition due to fog droplet interception by vegetation canopies. Based on experiences gained at an agricultural site on the Swiss Plateau and a mountainous ...

A comparison of methods for determining forest evapotranspiration and its components: sap-flow, soil water budget, eddy covariance and catchment water balance

A multi-year, multi-technique study was conducted to measure evapotranspiration and its components within an uneven-aged mixed deciduous forest in the Southeastern United States. Four different measurement techniques were used, including soil water budget (1 year), sap flow (2 years), eddy covariance (5 years), and catchment water budget (31 years). Annual estimates of evapotranspiration were s...

Vertical fogwater flux measurements above an elevated forest canopy at the L . ageren research site , Switzerland

During the winter of 2001/2002 wet and occult deposition measurements were performed at the L. ageren research site (690 m a.s.l.) in Switzerland. Two types of fog were observed: radiation fog (RF) and fog associated with atmospheric instabilities (FAI). The deposition measurements were performed above the forest canopy on a 45 m high tower. Occult deposition was measured by means of the eddy c...

Quantification of Fog Deposition with Two Similar Set-ups

The turbulent deposition of fog and cloud water is an important pathway for atmospheric inputs of pollutants to vegetation, especially to forest ecosystems. Based on a study by Trautner [1988], Wrzesinsky and Klemm [2000] estimated that fog deposition contributes 20–50% to total liquid water deposition in the Fichtelgebirge mountains in Germany. They point out that these calculations are associ...

Ion fluxes from fog and rain to an agricultural and a forest ecosystem in Europe

The deposition fluxes of inorganic compounds dissolved in fog and rain were quantified for two different ecosystems in Europe. The fogwater deposition fluxes were measured by employing the eddy covariance method. The site in Switzerland that lies within an agricultural area surrounded by the Jura mountains and theAlps is often exposed to radiation fog. At the Germanmountain forest ecosystem, on...
